MY individual project which is marked not present was combined with my story post… Growing up in Seattle can greatly alter your perception of what is normal and socially acceptable. as a matter of fact growing up anywhere can alter your perceptions of how things are done and normal social conduct and behavior. Seattle specifically can inflict perhaps a darker perception of reality and society due to the many sub cultures (most liberal) and the moody weather. I would like to do perhaps a narrative, perhaps a documentary, or perhaps a series of interviews that chronicle the Seattle lifestyles and perceptions of socially acceptable.

I didn’t grow up in Seattle, but I have definitely learned to appreciate the sun more living in the rainy Pacific Northwest. It sounds like you have several different topics here you could go with. The one that stands out for me is looking at how individuals’ backgrounds have affected the way they view the world. You would probably need to do a lot of interviews for something like this. You would also need to come up with a way to make it visually appealing.
Trying to follow different Seattle lifestyles could be more challenging, especially if you tried to categorize the lifestyles, because inevitably someone gets left out. You would have to come up with a way to get a representative sample of people to talk to.
This sounds like it could be a lot of fun since you will get to talk to a lot of people.

I always found it interesting to talk to out-of-towners and to hear they’re perceptions of what Seattleites are like. Every city has its own ‘personality’ and way of engagement. I hear Seattle’s rep is that it’s extremely polite, but a very difficult place to make new friends. I’d be interested to see why you suspect ppl in Seattle have a darker perception of reality compared to other major cities. In my experience, we’re more optimistic, but to each their own! To relate the pulse of a whole city to those of its residents – seems like quite a challenge and would be hardpressed to find any DIRECT relation maybe. Possibly interviews with out-of-towners in regards to how they classify the locals?

As a foreigner here, I’m interested in sub cultures and nice weather in Seattle. I think a documentary is a good idea to explicate how this environment affects the perception of a person.

Great idea and fun too! Could have a little snippet on many different sub-cultures or go into depth on one. Since we have many “out of towners” in the program from other countries (Mini, Belle, Nika, Jyotsna, Tom, Michelle…) and US states (Courtney, Katie, Ragan, Joel…) you could get a variety of perspectives on sub cultures unique to Seattle.

Remember that this is a story that can be expressed as text-and-images … and sound-and images … I’m not sure how “documentary” meets this requirement.
Also, remember that this is a research-based project. What do you mean by the phrase “normal social conduct and behavior”?

Magnus — I don’t see how this “a narrative, perhaps a documentary, or perhaps a series of interviews that chronicle the Seattle lifestyles and perceptions of socially acceptable” relates to “change.”
